Mission:
Cheminova’s mission is to control unwanted insects, plants and fungi in order to secure adequate food and fibre production and to improve the living conditions of the world’s population.

In the year 2050 the world population is estimated to be approximately 9 billion people - three times as many as in 1960. During the same period, the total agricultural area will show very modest growth leading to reduced agricultural area per person and the need for further improvements in yield and protection of crops.

Insects, plant diseases, and weeds still cause very considerable loss of yield in the most important crops. In addition, insect born diseases (i.e. malaria, yellow fever, and plague) rage large parts of humanity. The estimated annual loss of yield because of pests is approximately 42 per cent. Without plant protection products approximately 70 per cent would be lost.

As a leading global generic company in the plant protection industry, Cheminova shall use its core competences to identify, develop, register, manufacture, and market generic products to the global market offering farmers cost effective solutions with proven quality products.

Business area:
Cheminova's main business area is production and marketing of plant protection products.

Cheminova’s main activity is the development, production and marketing of plant protection products and fine chemicals. The company is a leading supplier of insecticides and a significant supplier of a range of herbicides and fungicides.

Outside plant protection products, Cheminova maintains an important fine chemicals business. Flotation agents used in the mining industry is another business area.

Products:
Cheminova supplies a wide range of plant protection products, the most important being:

  • Insecticides based on the active ingredients malathion, chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, methyl parathion, acephate, phosalone, gamma-cyhalothrin, acrinathrin, deltamethrin, abamectin and imidacloprid.
  • Herbicides based on the active ingredients glyphosate, imazethapyr, chlorimuron, metsulfuron, fenoxaprop and diflufenican.
  • Fungicides based on the active ingredient flutriafol, tebuconazole and fenpropidin.

Environmental policies:

Cheminova considers safety, health, and environment to be important business factors, and all activities are undertaken with a view to ensuring the continued improvement of the company's performance within these areas.

Thus, Cheminova endeavours to conduct all its activities with a high degree of consideration to humans and the environment and to communicate openly, both internally and externally, about environmental, health, and safety issues.

Cheminova's production facilities have environmental approvals, which are in accordance with local laws. The plants operate under high standards with regards to safety, health, and environment. Through established objectives and plans for each individual plant, the company continuously improves these standards. Cheminova issues an annual Environmental Statement that includes a description of the company’s production facilities in Harboøre, Denmark - please contact Cheminova A/S head office should you require a copy.

In the individual countries, the company works in accordance with the requirements of the national authorities with regards to quality, labelling, user instructions, packaging, transport, etc. Cheminova co-operates with local authorities and organisations to ensure that its products are used in accordance with the existing rules and regulations.

Cheminova supports the Chemical Industry's Responsible Care programme which main objective is to ensure continuous improvement within the areas of safety, health, and environment.

Furthermore, Cheminova complies with FAO's Code of Conduct. These are international guidelines for safe handling and use of products.

In its choice of distributors, Cheminova demands that these distributors undertake to comply with the above-mentioned set of rules and recommendations and furthermore participate in relevant training and stewardship programmes.

Production and environment:

The majority of Cheminova’s products are manufactured at the factory in Harboøre situated in the western part of Denmark. Furthermore production also takes place in India at Cheminova India Ltd.’s production facilities situated north of Bombay in the state of Gujarat. Production plants are designed and built by Cheminova's own engineers. Likewise, the production processes have been developed in-house in Cheminova’s own laboratories and pilot plants.

The products are shipped as formulated products or as concentrated chemicals.

The in-house development in Denmark and India of processes and production plants is of great importance to the competitiveness of Cheminova. Most of the production plants operate continuously and are dedicated for one product, and several plants range among the largest plants of their kind in the world.

The factories operate under environmental approvals granted by the relevant authorities. The approvals outline all aspects concerning production, such as wastewater treatment, gaseous and solid waste.

Approximately DKK 500 million has been invested in environmental plants.

The environmental protection facilities include among others the following plants:

  • Biological wastewater treatment plant
  • Solvents recovery plant
  • Sulphur recovery plant
  • Sulphurous waste recycling plant
  • Air incineration plant
  • Waste water incineration plant

Cheminova has joined the International Council of Chemical Associations' "Responsible Care" program.

Cheminova issues an annual Environmental Statement that includes a description of Cheminova’s production facilities in Harboøre, Denmark - please contact us if you require a copy. The production facilities in Denmark have been certified according to ISO 14001 regarding environment and OHSAS 18001 regarding health and safety.

Every year, a CSR report is prepared describing Cheminova's conditions regarding social responsibility, safety, health and environment. The report is published on the company website.

Product development:

One of Cheminova’s core competences is the development of production technology, and own synthesis development has been the backbone in the growth of Cheminova’s production activities. In recent years new formulation technologies have attracted more focus in Cheminova’s laboratories and the development of high quality formulations is today reflected in Cheminova’s product range.

The development of new products has high priority in Cheminova, and in todays competitive environment speed of development has become more important. This has lead to the introduction of new project management principles, which have resulted in a more efficient product development process. Focus is on developing and maintaining economically competitive production processes for new and existing products. In this respect environmental friendliness including reduction and efficient treatment of waste streams is an important parameter.

The numerous development laboratories and pilot plant facilities are located at the company head-quarters in Denmark. The laboratories are all furnished with the most modern experimental equipment, and the development work is supported by state of the art analysis laboratories. The pilot plant work benefits from Cheminova’s engineering departments and construction workshops allowing easy and fast scale up and technical verification of new production processes. In all respects the working environment lives up to the highest standards of the world.

The Development Function comprises the following three departments:

  • Synthesis Development - is responsible for developing competitive production processes based on modern chemistry for new active ingredients and for supplying technical support to current productions.
  • Formulation Development - is responsible for developing quality formulations for new as well as existing active ingredients based on modern formulation-technology. Likewise technical support for current products is supplied to the sales and production departments.
  • Pilot Plant - is responsible for scale up, process design and technical implementation of production processes for new active ingredients as well as new formulations and developing process engineering as a basis for establishing production set ups. Additionally, production in smaller scale is carried out typically in the introduction phase for new products.

The development activities in Denmark are supplemented by development work at Cheminova India. Since the addition of the Indian subsidiary to the Cheminova group new modern laboratories as well as pilot plant facilities have been established now working closely together with the Development Function in Denmark on new products for Cheminova’s global organisation.
